Problems with TV Tuner cards.?

Windows media center pc. Vista.

Auvitek ATSC tuner and Hauppauge HVR 1800.

The hauppauge has a radio tuner as well.

However, at any one time I can either have windows media center allow 1 TV tuner and the radio installed in WMC, or 2 TV tuners and no radio. In that case it says no radio tuner installed will have to go through tv tuner setup to set it up.

So I don't know what to do.

The radio tuner will work through the default application it installed with. But I want to use WMC to control it and both tv tuners. Anyone have this problem?

Simply put, WMC isn't designed to handle that many devices. I believe Vista's version of WMC accomodates that setup but I haven't yet confirmed this.

Why does TV picture clip off edges?

We're watching a widescreen DVD on a widescreen TV (TV and DVD player are Sony) and the TV clips off the sides of the picture while our new MacBook does not - the computer shows more on the sides. The DVD player has been used with both HDMI cables and component cables. We've tried all the different zooming options on the TV, but no matter what, it still cuts off some of the side pictures.

Not cool! Suggestions?

Why does TV picture clip off edges?
You need to configure your DVD player and television settings.

Basically, you have to change the DVD player's video mode from 4:3 to 16:9.

Then, you must set the TV to display at full 16:9.

In addition, is the widescreen DVD anamorphic or not?

What is your budget? It's a waste of time to recommend a 60" plasma when your budget is only $400 and it's a struggle to buy a quality 19" LCD.

Also, what screen size do you want/need? "Big screen" means 26" to some and 50"+ to others. Post answers to these questions and you might get a good, specific recommendation or two. Without this info, no one can realistically answer you. You'll just draw meaningless, inane answers like,"My biG scren visio 19' is to bitchin."

OMG! Reality TV drives me crazyyyyyy!! I mean when people see a camera on the street would'nt they try and get in the camera shot?? Shows like Making the Band 4 and the salt-pepa show that take place in NY espicailly. Or shows like the The hills, laguna beach etc...I really dont get that! Also on reality tv shows they show regualr ppl liek walking on the street. I mean other than the people who are actually the main ppl on the show, wouldnt th eppl who arent try and see what is happening or try and get in the camera?? or is reality tv not really "reality"? Someone plz plz explain.

Men out there, why do you veg out in front of the TV? Why do you watch tv for several hours straight and then expect us to get frisky with you only after you are good and tired of the tv? What can we do to get you off the tv and onto us? I am quite frankly getting tired of hubby's tv addiction, can I do anything about it?

I think that it's just a man's way to stop thinking about his day. Men tend to be very simple creatures. So when they're stressed, they need to decompress. Once they do, then they remember that they adore you and that they want to be with you. YOU are also a part of that relief! That's a good thing. You would rather be a part of their release than a part of the problem.

I would let my man know what you need. You won't get it all the time, but maybe you can request some Date Time BEFORE getting intimate. Because men see it as a release, but women need a little bit of love and affection. He probably doesn't understand where you're coming from, just as you don't get where he's coming from.

Reply:Do you have a video camera? Make a movie of yourself in something sexy, or nothing at all, and do a few provocitave moves on it. Whatever rocks your boat. When you're done, the next night tell your husband you're tired of the same old TV, and lets watch a movie. Put in the movie you made, and hope he won't choke on anything when it starts playing. He should get the idea. Oh yea, if you have any kids make sure they're out of the room.

Reply:Well, for me all it would take is telling me she wants me on her...if she actually put on lingerie, I'd never turn the tv on again. I watch tv, because she isn't interested in me on her. I come home from work and I help out with the kids, housework, cooking, shopping, and on the weekends I do all of it so she can get a break. She ALWAYS finishes at least once before me and I do anything she wants-if something is wrong she isn't telling me and that's her fault. So tell me, why should I turn the tv off. When I inquire about us having sex, all I hear is no(insert any excuse you feel like-I have heard them all). Once a month she wil tell me she is in the mood and proceed to give me maybe 1/2 hour. At least the tv entertains me when I want it to and it likes me.
Reply:Don't make your self so available to him. If he knows he can get it whenever he wants why wouldn't he just watch t.v until he's ready (hope you don't have Tivo0. If you refuse him a couple of times he will be itching for it. Go take a shower smell all nice and put on something sexy and simple right before you think he is done. Then pick up the phone and call one of your guy friends. When he approaches you brush him off all while laughing your @$$ off on the phone. Just do that a couple of times. He'll get the picture.

But when I swich to another tv, I have all the channels.

Your TV set needs to STORE the stations for it to appear......

Computer TV tuner/living in remote area?

Okay, so I'll admit I don't understand a whole lot about TV tuners, but I want to buy one for my laptop - I want to record some of my favorite shows.

I live in a kind of remote area - I can only get dial-up internet and we just have basic TV stations from a roof antenna. Will this affect my ability to get TV reception for my computer at all?

(Sorry for being so ignorant about this topic!)

You're only going to get the stations that you pull in from roof antenna - it's not like suddenly you're gonna get free HBO.

Reply:Unfortunately, with only dial-up connection you will be quite disappointed in the quality of the video you get..... your machine will be constantly buffering the video... so you will see a few seconds worth....then it will buffer some more...and you will see that, then it stops to buffer some more.....

All in all it will be a very jerky, on again/off again reception and you will be very tired of it....... to get and view video you really need to have broadband connection.... cable, DSL, satellite, or cellular broadband..........

Reply:ok, remote area and dial up only, I would say you want to get streeming video and I don't think it will work great with dial up. I used a tv card and if I tried to (download) to pc, it would be a bad picture and shutter. (frozzzze). The main problem will be the dial up SPEED. Live feed requires fast systems and connection speeds.

Ok guys here is it TV-Tuner Philips 7134-Chipset:PC-Combo Modem/TV-Tuner CTX908, TV-Tuner CTX910 It is in a medion computer I upgraded to vista and it stop working. IU talked to medion and they said the computer SHOULD NOT have vista on it and they can not help me. can some one find me a driver for this on vista plz!!!!!!!

Even now, when vista has been out for so long, not a lot of drivers have been made for devices yet. I recommend that you go back to xp, get all of your devices' functionality back, and download windowblinds to make it look like vista if you like it so much. With xp, you'll have better performance since it can utilize your specs better than vista can.
Reply:Unless Philips wrote a Vista driver for that tuner, there is none for it. Put XP on the computer, or put the tuner on an XP computer.

They claim it works for PS3 and it does. But when I turned on my PS3 the screen is blank

I went under Settings and Display Settings and tried to change it to HDMI but the Blank black screen appears.

I know they say to change the TV settings to HDMI but my TV doesn't say anything about it.

When I went to Audio settings to change it to HDMI it says

Check to make sure the cable is plugged in all the way. Sometimes those HDMI cables have a bit of plastic that make it hard to push in all the way sometimes.

Have you pressed and held the power button on the PS3? That will reset the video settings. The PS3 will then auto-detect what settings you need for the TV.

There also might be a HDCP handshake issue. Some TVs have a tendency to do that, but the TV will show no signal otherwise. Basically it requires turning the PS3 and TV on at different time intervals until they finally sync the HDCP (ie, PS3 on, wait 2, turn TV on, etc).
Reply:I had a similar problem hooking my roomates 360 up to a non hd tv after having it hooked up to an hd tv, there was actually a switch or something he found that gave the option of hd or non hd, not sure if its the same for ps3.

Can anyone let me know the connections for the following in simple terms please:

I have a Sharp Aquos LCD TV, a Virgin Box and just purchased a Sony DVD Hard Drive Recorder.

The TV has 2 scart sockets (1 RGB and 1 AV) and 2 HDMI sockets (HDMI and HDMI/Audio)

The box has 2 scarts (1 TV and 1VCR)

The DVD recorder has 2 scarts(line 1 Decoder and Line 3 TV) and also HDMI out.

The Sony handbook seems to be written for an electronics engineer and is totally confusing.

If it helps I would like to utilise the HDMI connection if possible

Your help would be appreciated as I am tying myself and the cables in knots....thanks in advance.

Connect the Sony DVD to the TV by HDMI.

Connect the Virgin box by SCART (out) to the Sony (VCR/DVD), and the SCART (TV out) to the TV.

SInce the Virgin box has no HDMI, you can't use it. i.e. the HDMI, I mean.

Then connect Both units to the HDMI inputs, the DVD player should be connected to the HDMI / audio one for DOLBY surround....

Other than that, you end up having to watch VIRGIN in low Def quality instead of Hi Def quality....But you connect your PRESENT VIRGIN BOX to the Scart labled AV.....

And there's your LOW DEF connection.....

Oh that sucks.....Oh that suckity sucks...

All your TV viewing in LOW DEF....Hours and HOURS and HOURS of the MAIN TV Viewing....in Looooooow Def.

And your DVD has a BETTER connection than your MAIN source of Viewing Pleasure !

Reply:I think that you'll find the Virgin box has a HDD recorder inside of it so you can record your programs straight to it so all you need to do is connect the Virgin box to your tv via scart, the dvd recorder to your tv via the hdmi port and then if you want to record from Virgin onto the dvd recorder just connect the dvd recorder to the virgin box via scart.

TV: Picture breaks up and sound cuts out several times a minute?

Hi- I wish I could describe this better but I am no TV expert. We have a flat screen, digital tv that is acting up. A couple times each minute, the screen breaks up into what looks like big pixels and the sound cuts out at the same time. It'll go back to normal and then break up and cut out again about 20 or 30 seconds later. We have Time Warner cable. Our flat plasma screen TV in the living room doesn't have any trouble.

Is it the TV or is it a cable? I've looked at the cables attached to the back of the tv and everything looks tight enough. Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

YOU HAVE a weak signal to your TV set....

You need to get Time Warner out to identify the bad cable, splitter or cable box.....AND make sure your TV does not have a bad tuner.

You should be able to take your TV over to the other TV set and borrow it's cable line to verify this.....
Reply:it could be a loose contact in the cable loop, which you have connected to the TV. or even the connector of the TV may come loose inside the TV.

I have an old CRT based JVC (32" model AV-32150). Problem is this....I have the tv cabled directly from the Direct tv box (vial s-video and component audio.). The mode is video one. When I hit the channel button on the tv, the mode changes to TV and the channel is lock on channel 2. I then have to go back into menu and reset it to video one. This did not happen when I had the tv hook to the sattelite box via the dvd player. any suggestions to solve this?

Connect a cable from the output to TV jack on the DirecTV box. Go into the TV menu and scan for channels. Delete any channels found other than 3. That way when you hit the channel button it should be on 3. Then you can see the DirecTV while you reset it to S-Video on # 1 input.

I pay a lot for high speed Internet from Comcast in northern NJ. Also I hooked up a PC tuner card for analog cable TV and after splitting the comcast cable it was working fine for about six months. I could get clear picture on almost all channels when watching comcast cable tv on my PC through simple Windows-based TV tuner (analog). I guess it would also work for regular analog TV however I don;t have one :)

Suddenly all channels became scrambled, the device is probably working fine, because I tested another brand new one with no effect. can someone explain to me what has happened? was my signal encoded somehow to prevent me from watching analog TV for free as an add-on to internet access I had? can I override it somehow using some other kind of TV tuner card for my PC or software application? I really don't like the idea of paying for set top box and all this stuff, because simply I watch TV maybe a few hours in a month due to lack of time. for that reason I don't will to pay for it.

Cable Internet uses a standard TV channel for the the downloading of Internet data. The channel used is determined by the equipment used by the cable company. The rest of the channels are used for regular Cable TV programming. They all use the same cable. That is why you split the signal one to the TV/Computer the other to the cable modem. Your cable modem is listening for data on its channel. The TV set is receiving all the other channels. The TV will simply skip the data channel as it will automatically determine it is not in a usable picture format.

This is the standard setup. You will receive all the available analog channels and the data channel UNLESS the cable company filters them out. Since the cable company pays the cable networks so much per subscriber they only want to provide the regular cable channels to paying subscribers for regualr cable TV.

So the cable company will put on your cable TV line a series for filters that will remove all the channels except your download Internet Channel.

What happened was the cable system finally put the correct filters in place to block out all but the Internet download channel. The filters are put on your cable TV line coming into your home/apartment in a place that is not accessible by you.

In order to receive regular TV the filters must be removed and it is illegal for you to do so.
Reply:If you were not paying for cable service they probably disconnected it. They do not scramble the analog signal. They have to physically come out and put a trap(filter) on the line. Comcast in my area audits all addresses every 6 months. They probably just did an audit for illegals and put a trap on your line to block all analog signal. Your modem uses a digital signal. Sorry this happened.
Reply:Well you didn't buy Cable, so they scrambled the signal.

The installation crews don't get all the work done during the initial install, they can sometimes take months to get caught up.

You're lucky you had it for that amount of time.....

Sure u can do so. Just connect Dish TV settop box to TV tuner card via AV cords or S-video . Or buy a settop box for computers by Dish TV

Ok so I am moving out of my house into an apartment in a few days and it has free basic cable, so i am going to use my computer as my tv. Anyway to make this work all i would have to do is buy a tv tuner card and hook the cable wire from the wall into the tv tuner and download some software to view the signal right. Also all the tv tuners i have looked at come with a audio cable. What would i have to use this for, because i already have a surround sound system that i am using for my computer.

You won't need it if you already have a "sound card" in your system. The TV tuner has a sound card in it.

the av is for a vcr/gamesystem or some other av device.

usually if you get an ATI tuner you get free software with it, (its pretty good software)

you may need to plug that audio cable into your soundcard, or onto your motherboard, wherethe cddrive audio would plug in.

you dont really need the CD's audio so just unplugit and plug that into the motherboard where the cd cord was

I think it started after I installed IE7. To edit buttons sends me to "The following Website was not found: us.edit.companion.yahoo.com/config/slv4_...

" and the 'My TV Listing' under the TV button sends me to "Oops, page not found

RIGHT CLICK ANYWHERE IN TOOLBAR SECTION OF THE BROWSER AND MAKE SURE STANDARD BUTTONS IS CHECKER IN POPUP MENU. IT SHOULD BE THERE SELECT IT.

IF YOU USE FIREFOX: ITS THE SAME AS INTERNET EXPLORER, EXCEPT THE OPTION IS CALLED NAVIGATION TOOLBAR. I HOPE THIS HELP:-)

The upper left portion of my TV had a shade of red .. no matter what color is being displayed on TV.. For a while, I had my direct tv receiver and my clock on top of my tv.. Whenever I wave the back of my clock in front of the red shade it goes back to normal..

any suggestions/tips?

Standard fault with standard solution !

Unplug set from mains supply at the wall socket !! leave off for at least 30 mins then plug back in and switch on ! Cured !!!

Note : some clocks do indeed have an electro magnet in them , however no damage is done to the TV by magnetic fields and it is the shadow mask inside the tube that gets temporarily magnetised !!!

Reply:Yes. You have caused a magnetic imbalance in your TV. Their is some type of magnetic material in the clock that has caused it to distort the pixels in your TV. The only real way to fix this is a process called "de-gausing" and I would recommend taking it to a proffesional repair shop to see if they can fix it. Magnetic fields cause fluctuations in the alignment of the TV's normal pixel arrangement, causing some of them to change the color viewed on screen. Generaly, you dont want to have any type of magnet near a TV screen that isnt shielded.

As we watch TV, there always seems to be a commercial that show scantily clad women. Now me being a man, this doesn't bother me in the least. I don't get excited and want to jump all over my wife, I don't get an erection and I don't think about them after all is said and done. My wife on the other hand, has a fit when these commercials come on, she get totally agree with me, turns the channel, or throws the TV remote at me if I watch the commercial. Most times, I will turn my head or get up to do something while the commercial is playing. It doesn't bother me when she watches her stories that show men in various states of clothes. I am so confused as to how to overcome this problem, besides not watch TV with her, or continue to not look at the TV when the commercials come on. BTW, i do not make any comments about the subject matter on the TV.. just so you know.

While you're trying out ways to accomplish that, consider trying this: when the gals come on the screen, jump up (drop the remote or pillow or something), holler, " you dogs, you're nothin' but anorexic egotists, you sxxt pigs!" And then jump your honey's bones, kiss all over her face, blow her neck (like a baby), feel her up, and loudly praise God for giving you the sexiest woman on earth to have for your very own. If you're consistant with this, it might get her attention (and funny bone), and start the healing process.

Reply:sounds like a bad case of insecurity to me. Don't know how you could get around it other than not watching tv at all or leaving the room when an ad comes on the set. My suggestion is to shower her with compliments, comment on how well she looks, and be very attentive to her whenever possible. I am a bit insecure with the way I look and maybe your wife is going through the same thing. Those girls are much prettier and in shape than the normal average woman and we don't like it. Although sex sells, and that is why they are using those women in the commercials. But, honestly, alot of those woman don't truly look like that on an everyday basis. i have an old crt videocon tv in my room i am planing to have a dvd player but there are no sockets given at the back nor in the front my tv is 17 years old and i also want to add speakers with that tv

only way i can think of is if it doesnt have a cable jack and only has the two screws you put the anntena on with there is an addapter to get a small cable connection into it. hook up a vcr to that through a cable and controll your dvd player through that, you can set your sorround sound up through the out of the dvd player without even having to hook it up to the tv so thats not a problem.
Reply:If your DVD player only has composite cables (Yellow, White, Red) and your TV only accepts coaxial RF inputs (round screwy connection) then you'll need some way of converting one to the other. There's two options, off the bat...

One way is to buy something called a RF modulator. The DVD player video/audio cable then gets hooked up to the modulator and then another wire goes form the modulators output to your TV. If your a cable customer, you'll need to buy a modulator with RF inputs and hook your cable through that as well.

Another option, if you don't want to buy anything, is using a relatively new (not 17 old) VCR. Basically you may be able to use a spare VCR to do the same thing the RF modulator does, by following similar steps.

As for speakers.. it depends on what kind of speakers you mean, but essentially you'll have to hook the speaker system up directly to the audio ouput on your modulator/vcr or your DVD player.. and not to the TV.

Reply:It is the way the TV projects the image when you go to wide-screen.

The wide-screen format in the TV is 16:10 where the format of the PS2 is 16:9.

If you are so unhappy with your Dad's choice , why not tell him.

I would personally be hurt if I spent that sort of money on my child and she just sold it because she didn't like it.

I am having FIOS tv service installed. With regular cable tv, any tv plugged into the cable picked up TV channels. Because FIOS is fiber-optic, will all TVs be able to get service on them, or do I need to get the converter box for every TV in my house in order for them to work?

You will NEED the box by April anyways...they are going FULL DIGITAL in April....

So get the boxes you need...the installer will know what's necessary.

If your TV has a digital Tuner in it then NO......Even if you have an Analog tuner, you'll get channels 49 and below until 2009 when everything goes digital..........Even then...they do sell digital tuners for about $40.

Fiber optic has no bearing on TV broadcast. That box they put on the side of your place (ONT) will convert fiber optic to COAX.

Now without a STB (coverter box) you will not get all the channels you may be paying for... Verizon does have a Digital converter box that is 1/4 the size and price of a STB but you will not get high def.

If your TV has a cable card slot, you can get a cable card, usually the cheapest thing to rent from verizon.

I can tilt the tv slightly, so I need to get the HDMI cable up the wall to the hole. Anybody have any idea how I can guide the cable to the hole in order to connect it? Or any other way? All asnwers appreciated.

Reply:I had to get a wire through a ceiling how i did it was i taped the wire good and tight to a wire hanger (i`m presuming you cant see the otherside of the wall )

the other option is if you already have a wire going up and if its long that this wire may guide your ps3 wire up by tapeing it to it this might save alot of patience needed with the wire hanger at the hole.

Reply:Hmm....going through the wall seems like a complicated way to do things. It does elminate looking at the wires hanging down tho. I would start at the top hole, connecting the cable to the tele. If the hole is big enough at the bottom to where you can see the cable come down, you could fish it out with like a coat hook or something. Otherwise, maybe take a cable that's already through the wall, tie a bit of string to the top end, tie the string to HDMI cable, and thread them through. If it was my house, I'd just cut holes at the top and bottom to where this was easy. Drywall can be cut with a steak knife, if need be. Plaster walls need a saw, though. Good luck!!!

My 5 year old girl dog barks and jumps up at the TV when ever there are animals on it. We currently have a 42" rear projection TV and looking at buying a 42" LCD in the next few months. OUr current TV has scratch marks on the screen from her and we dont want this to happen to out new TV. We cannot fix it to the wall due to the shape and size of the room, so where ever we put it it will be on a stand. I have tried shouting "NO" to her as soon as an animal comes on the TV, which does work but I dont want to have to do this everytime it happens cos after the 50th time a night of shouting "NO" it does my head in !!

Any ideas?

Reply:Some how you have to train your dog to be afraid of going near the tv.....either the electric collar or a device that might let out a loud sound when the dog approaches, i know they make little battery operated devices that let out a loud shreek when a dog jumps on a couch....possibly something along those lines will work. Either way it will take some time to make the dog afraid of the tv.

Is she socialized enough ? why not try taking her for walks with a mates dog it will tire her out and she wont be bothered about whats on TV . You could get her a dog bed and put it somewhere no where near the TV and teach her the command bed and then if shes away from the TV she wont know whats on ...

Reply:I don't know, but mine does it too although he hasn't scratched the TV he's a bit too small, he is getting better if you can hold on to her and just stroke her calmly, it seems to soothe mine - he knows he doesn't need to 'protect' us - still grumbles though!...........just can't help laughing at mine though - he was watching Crufts (which strangely DIDN'T have him going completely bonkers!) he saw the GSD looked at our GSD, back at the TV, then he backed off trying to work out how the German Shepherd could be in the box and lying on the floor at the same time! dogs do think, it puzzled him all night! Lol! Be interested if anyone has a surefire cure to it!

Have you looked at BET? All television stations favor people of certain appearances. Did you notice that on some all of the women are tall pale skinned and busty? I am sure that you will find similar things on Asian networks too. Racism can occur within a race. I agree that the people on Mexican television look white, maybe they are? Some Mexicans are white and some just look that way. 1% by the way is a very low percentage. In American TV Asians are severely underrepresented.

Will my TV SPDIF digital coaxial out have surround sound?

My receiver doesnt have hdmi inputs. Can i connect all my devices (xbox, dvd player, cable box) via hdmi to my TV and then use my TV's Spdif digital coaxial output to connect to receiver and have multichannel surround sound?

Example: xbox hdmi to TV, then TV Spdif digital coax output to receiver. Will i get surround sound?

Depends on your TV.

Most TVs will not pass through compressed audio, such as DD from the HDMI input to s/pdif, but some will.

You can always connect all sources to the TV for video and then connect via s/pdif each source to the AV receiver.
Reply:Maybe. It depends if the TV passes the HDMI audio to a digital coax or optical out.

But if it doesn't work you can take video via HDMI to the TV and take coaxial or optical audio from each device to receiver? That will give you surround sound. The disadvantage is you have to switch both the TV (to select video source) and the AVR (to select audio source), so I'd do it that way if your approach doesn't work.

LCD Projection TV problem?

My Hitachi 50 inch lcd projection tv has a yellow circle in the middle of the screen. Kind of like a cloud of yellow. I still have warranty on this tv and am wondering what is wrong and what the estimated price of parts and labor to fix it is. If the cost to fix it is expensive, then we will get a new tv as replacement. Is my tv dying??? I'm kinda hoping it is so I can get a new one.

If you do have a warranty, the repair should be free. They won't give you a new TV.

I don't recognize that symptom, but a lamp is typically $200 to $300 but if it needs a light engine, it could be over $1000.

Direct TV is ripping us off!?

My husband and I switched to Direct TV when Dish wanted $175 up front for HD hook up after being with them for 4 years. We never had HD before so when we switched over we assumed we had it. Recently we had to stay with our inlaws while work was being done in our house. They had just switched to Direct TV on our reference. It was then that we noticed that we had been paying for HD for 8 months and not been getting it. At our inlaws, there was an HD channel for every regular channel. This was not the case at our house. When I called Direct TV they asked why we had not called about the situation before and I told them we never knew until our inlaws signed up and we saw that our set-up was nothing like there's. I asked them to credit our account (They owe us $80) but they say because we have been getting service they can't credit us for anymore than 2 months. Who can I speak to about this that will agree that it is B.S. and possibly get us credited in full?

Same thing happened to us, We had been paying for HD channels and not getting them, I called and they said there was something wrong with our box, they sent a tech guy and charged us $20....the tech guy said it was not our box, they (DirecTV) had not downloaded the channels properly, No credit given for us either.

Good Luck getting a credit and someone who you can understand on the phone.....

Are HD TV's synonymous with Digital?

There are warnings in the media about the need to have a digital TV or conversion box by 2009. I assumed that the new flat screen, high definition tv's were ready to receive digital transmissions. However, I've been paying more attention and do not see "digital" listed in any of the labels or listed features for the new tv's on the market. It seems logical that newly manufactured tv's would meet the required standards due to be in effect by next year, but I would like to know this for sure.

All the new tvs are required to have a built in digital tuner. Look for something called ATSC Tuner, that's usually what they call it. And HD is not necessarily synonymous with Digital. If a signal is HD then yes it is digital. But you can receive a digital signal and it not be HD content. So next year, they will convert those analog signals to digital, which will clean then up a little bit, but those old channels still wont be HD, if that makes sense.

Ok, I broke my TV screen.

The details are embarrassing.

Anyway, I have a huge crack in the top right corner of my TV screen and I'm doing research to discover methods on replacing the screen. I'm willing to do work--lots of it. All I need is resources. Does anyone know a location to get junked TVs? Perhaps I can find my model through weeks of searching and replace the screen with one from another TV that got thrown out because of some other problem.

Any answer is acceptable, but please don't tell me I can't do it. It'll be a challenge and therefore fun. Thanks!

In fact, you'll find most Visios listed in E-bay as Parts only-Broken display panel....

And the worst thing is....Visio doesn't supply parts, you have to send the unit to them for service, and SOMETIMES they only charge a set fee for ANY failure...

And if that set fee is $500....and covers the display panel too, then that's a GOOD DEAL....

But if they charge the cost of the panel, then it's NOT a good deal, because they actually do cost as much (or MORE) as a new TV set....

Plasma TV question?

Over 2 years ago, I bought a 60 inch Plasma TV. I believe it is 1080i, since 1080p type TV's came out after I purchased this one. My question is, I have seen exceptional pictures in stores from Blu-Ray DVD players, which are 1080p..(and most newer TV's are capable of 1080p.) Using a 1080i type set, will the video look any better than just watching a cable HD show? (These are all mostly 1080i from a cable service.)

But it will look JUST as good as your Cable HD does, on that TV set, in fact it should look the same as Cable....
Reply:Well all stations are not created equal. For example Discovery hd looks better than cbs.

with bluray your picture will look equal to some but better than most.

If you plasma is 1080p/24 capable than your pic will be much smoother because the processing will be 3:3 pulldown instead of 3:2..

The tv has three red,white, and yellow rca speaker jacks in back, 3 more in front, and a headphone jack. The cable box and my dvd-vcr has many inputs and outputs. Only the headphone out jack of my tv has any volume. Can't I use plugs from the cable box to tv, or from cable box to vcr, then to tv for a louder sound? Why wouldn't the cable box or vcr-dvd player act like an amp and make louder sound go to my tv? I'm sure it could be hooked up, but how?

First try a DVD or VHS if your getting sound through the TV then that rules out the TV speakers %26amp; volume level as a cause. Comcast.com Setup %26amp; Configuration: find the diagram you need. Follow th hookup diagram for using RCA connections for a TV-VCR-CABLE BOX hookup. Or just call Comcast %26amp; they will guide you through the hookup if your clueless and have hooked it up wrong. They can also tell you how to check the volume level on the cable box.

the tv was £700. I have contacted argos and they have given me the manufacturers details and told me to contact them. i know i am out of guarantee but it doesn't seem right to pay all that money for a tv that only lasts that long and for it to be same fault as first set. any ideas what i can/should do. my 5 year old not enjoying cbeebies on a portable!!

If it was replaced in March 2007, it will now be out of guarantee. If you contact the manufacturer, as it is so close to the guarantee they might help. But unlike what the other answerers are saying here, if ithas developed a fault outside of the guarantee, and you have no insurance policy on it, you don't have a leg to stand on. The Sale of Goods Act is very useful within the first year, after that, liability for faults diminishes greatly. I would contact the manufacturer (you don't say who this is) and you may find them very helpful. Otherwise, I would learn the lesson and don't buy a cheap TV from Argos again! You should look for value not just the cheapest thing you can get!
Reply:You don't say who the manufacturer is but anyway write to them and explain as you have above. Tell them the tv is not fit for its purpose under the Sale of Goods Act. They should at the very least repair it free of charge and that repair will carry a 1 year guarantee on the fault in case in goes again.

If they refuse to repair or replace then contact Trading Standards and they will contact the manufacturer on your behalf to resolve situtaion.
Reply:Phone your local trading standards office up and they will help you with writing a letter to Argos customer services or head office.

The sale of goods act states that appliances should be of durable quality.

They will be very helpfull with who to write to and what you need to put in letter.

I have an experience that my 2 year old Canon Camera was fully replaced with new one by the manufacturer.
Reply:someone gave me some good info regarding an issue had with an expensive item, also out of warranty.

Even thought the item is not in guarantee, you would obviously expect it to last longer costing £700.

Now apparantly the help available lies with the retailer, but all they can normally do is send it for repair...I contacted the manufacturer and they helped me out straight away.

Another thing is to go into the Argos store with your receipt and speak to the manger, sometimes they can be very understanding (I have seen instances before) and help you...but one thing to remember, start with "I wonder if you can help me...?" and stay calm, they are more likely to help you like that, and explain what has happened.

Moved TV, now Directv doesn't work?

Moved tv from one side of the room to the other. I only disconnected from the wall, not the TV. I am technically capable. Even transponders are"0" sometimes the tuner fails and the LNB always fails. I get no guide and no channels. I do have a second TV off of the same dish that has no problems. I checked all the connections and tried 2 different cables. These cables are about 50ft in length. The original cable was about 25ft. What else could have happened to cause the failure?

Well, it depends....When you unplugged the TV set it could have forgotten whether it was tuned to channel 3 or you were actually using Video 1 or Video 2 as your Input connection from the Direct TV box......

I'd start there.....

Now IF you have the Direct TV Logo appearing when you start up the TV and the Box...then forget the instructions above....

You would need to make sure your Satellite cable is DIRECTLY CONNECTED to the box with NOTHING else making the connections.....and I wouldn't really trust that Banana Connector you used to connect the extra 10 foot cable on the ORIGINAL cable.....

You see, your BOX sends DC power to your LNB outside to amplify the satellite signal....and that BANANA PLUG may be blocking that power if it's AC coupled.....OR if you used a SPLITTER which most likely will block the power to your dish....

You may have to go to RADIO SHACK and tell them you need an adaptor that will allow DC power to pass thru it......

That 2nd TV has it's own box I'll bet, and it's using LNB # 2 and your faulty unit is using LNB #1.....

You need power......
Reply:I don't know my DirecTv does weird unexplainable things all the time. First I'd try and find a reset button (the newer boxes have those). Double check all the connections are correct (just to be 100% sure) If you can't find the reset button or it doesn't work unplug it (from any electrical sources) for 10 seconds or so. If it still doesn't work call 1-888-directv. I've had unexplainable outages before, called the number, and the customer service rep did something and then it worked again. But again, who knows ... I swear those boxes are extra EXTRA sensitive.

Reply:Sounds like you have a problem with the cable going to the LNB. What you can try first is take the receiver to the other room in the house %26amp; hook it up there. This will confirm if it still works ok. If all works well there bring either receiver back to the room where you have problems %26amp; inspect the cable that supplies the LNB, especially the connector %26amp; if you have to, follow it back to the LNB,possibly there is a problem where it gets screwed into the wall (if you have a wall plate).

Reply:sounds like it's probably your directv Receiver that may have been damaged while moving? A drop? A jolt? You'd be surprised as to how sensitive some of those are. Call Directv and their customer service may be able to do something for you, or replace it.
Reply:first its most likely no tthe dish because it was working fine until ou moved it sounds like a cable problem or u have on wrong out put cahnnel. make sure the coax is going from sat-in jack on the receiver to antenna jack on the tv. second check out put channel, output cahnnel is determined by the cables u are using, red white and yellow cables = video 1 , video 2 , standard coax = 2,3,or 4 , good luck but these are the only two things it could be i promise you didnt damage it as one said

I have a older model Sony TV, KB-32FV-15, about 8 years old (?) just the other day the tv remote stop working. After fiddling around with the remote I found out that the remote would only work when I'm standing 1-2 feet in front of the tv, moving further away the remote doesn't work. I tried it other remotes with the same results.

Any ideas?

I had the same TV with the same problem. Try replacing the batteries. If that doesn't fix it, I eventually broke down and bought a logitech universal remote. They are really nice because you hook the remote up to a a computer with a USB cable and then you download the correct programming for your TV. No codes, no hassle!!!

Plasma TV Swivel Stand?

Im looking for a swivel stand for a 42 inch plasma tv-its a Philips but I Cant find any specific stands that say they work with Philips.

I would prefer an all in one stand for dvd vcr etc etc %26amp; of course the plasma but if someone knows of just the swivel part for just the tv.

If its an all in one stand-Black or Black %26amp; silver %26amp; also the same if its just for the tv.

I have done all the basic searching on the net-Im hoping someone else will find just what Im looking for.

Plasma TV Swivel Stand?
There are a couple of VESA standard hole patterns on the back of the set for mounting. Any bracket that has that hole pattern should fit. However you may need to check the weight of the unit with the max weight for the mount.

If you are looking for a stand mount this might be good.

That's a good TV. The native resolution is 720p, but it accepts all signals. Nothing is wrong with 720p, it still looks loads better over 480 (well, I guess you're PAL region, so 576).

If you have the money you should get a 1080p, especially since you're getting into the size range that 1080p becomes prevalent. You'll also be able to use the Bluray and PS3 functionality to the fullest.

#1 complaint of consumers after they purchase a TV is that they wish they went with a bigger TV [Consumer Reports]. So unless you're putting the TV into a fixed area, consider getting the next size larger.
Reply:1080p is considered better than 1080i because p is progressive scan and i is interlaced. Interlaced can cause ghosting on the screen, since it displays half the lines every half frame. p shows all lines of resolution every full frame. Progressive scan makes for a better picture. Report It

Reply:I recommend buying a tv that displays 1080p resolution. These tv's will give you the best HD picture for games and blue ray DVD's. PS3 or 360 games that run in 1080p are amazing. You'll notice the difference right away.

I have Emerson TV with DVD/VCR COMBO, but both DVD and VCR COMBO are not working right now. I would like to purchase DVD/VCR RECORDER to connect to Emerson TV. Will that be possible? I have Left and Right AUDIO and VIDEO on front of the TV, but are they OUTPUT or INPUT? I am not sure what is the difference between OUTPUT and INPUT.

I have basic cable inside the TV, I don't have the cable box.

What VCR/DVD RECORDER do you recommend? I would like the one that I can record tv shows or movies directly to DVD and VCR. Also, I would like the one that I can transfer recorded tv shows and movies from VHS to DVD.

Whatever you buy the manual will have instructions to help you with what you are trying to do....what you probably want to do is send your cable signal into the recorder using the coax cable that is coming out of your wall...plug that to the recorders coax input, then from the recorders coax output you will need another coax cable to connect the recorder to the TV. Once you set up the recorder, you will need to tune in the cable channels into the recorder.

...as far as Iputs and Outputs, its exactly what it sounds like it is...the the inputs take in the signal from one source and the outputs send the signal out to another source.

...as far as what recorder to get...I'm really not sure, but read up on what you are considering...search the internet and read reviews...I personally would stay away from anything that is a combo...Like your TV with the DVD/VCR combo...most times, when one stops working they both stop working...i think you get better quality in single components...VCRs are going the way of the 8-track.

my ps3 is used on a component tv. it has been used on this type of tv for a while. i went to my friends house and he has an hdtv. to hook it up to this tv, we used the hdmi cord. then i brought the ps3 back to my compnent tv. i hooked the cord up and there is no audio or video. the a/v cord does not work. i believe that i need to go back to the hdtv and change the settings of the ps3 to component on that tv. but it says in the manual all you have to do is hold the power button for more than 5 seconds and it will adjust to the tv. is there a roblem with my tv or do the settings just need to b e changed on the hdtv.

Saying you learned a language by watching tv?

People are always saying "I learned English by watching movies/tv..etc." Are these people truly learning English by just watching TV or are they doing something else? Is there anyone here who learned English by just watching TV? And if so, how did you do it? Is it only possible to learn English by watching TV or can other languages be learned by watching TV (in that language of course)? I never hear of anyone learning Spanish by TV, but it seems everyone can learn English by watching TV, why is this?

By my personal experience, you can learn a certain skill in language by watching TV; listening. Believe it or not English is my third language. I moved to America when I was in 5th grade (im a sophomore in highschool now) and being a little kid i was, i consumed my time watching cartoons. I gradually leaned how to listen for keywords, and soon in just about 2 weeks i began to understand basic English that my friends and teachers spoke at school. No you cannot learn the whole enchilada (speaking and writing) Just by watching TV. However by being able to listen I picked up the other two skill with incredible speed.

This was the same with my second language, Japanese. Again i lived there so i was in a stronger position to learn the language itself, but TV definately helped.

Conclusion:

You can learn the listing concept of any language through TV, but not speaking nor writing.

p.s: my first language is korean, just in case ur wondering :P
Reply:...well, I´m german and I learned (and am still leaning) my english by watching every movie in english and some american tv shows, like Buffy and Angel (very helpful with slang and "bad" words), Mr. Ed, the Brady Bunch and some others - thank god for inventing the dvd - and if I hear a word I don´t know, I look it up in my dictionary...

I improve my knowledge by visiting the yahoo chat so I can ask the british or american people what I don´t understand and to "keep in training" - so to speak.

Since I grew up in eastern germany we had to learn russian in school, so I started learning english by translating the lyrics of the "Pet Shop Boys" and later "Simon %26amp; Garfunkel" and Dean Martin with my dictionary.

So I can tell you, it´s really possible to learn a language by that method and I think it should work with spanish, too.

But I have to admit, in spanish-speaking TV they talk really really fast, so it´s harder to understand what they are saying. So if I wanted to learn Spanish I would start listening to spanish music and translating the lyrics.

(By the way: how is my english, is it good enough to make myself understandable???)
Reply:TV certainly helped me learn Italian while I was stationed in Italy many years ago. The news shows are good because you already know many of the main stories. Commercials are great because there is so much repetition and they show you the product. It has the advantage of being available in your own home, you are not purely relying on the written or spoken word but on action as well to aid comprehension. It is more natural and true to real life than reading or listening to radio or a CD. While living abroad I noticed that in Holland and Belgium English or American films are subtitled rather than dubbed - as is the case in France and Germany. The opportunities to hear English are much greater than just about any other language so it is not surprising that watching TV is such a popular method of learning it.

Ok so I read all the related questions but still can't find an answer. I am borrowing my brothers TV since he has no room for this one yet. Ive had it for like 2 years or something and for some reason when I turn it on, it makes clicking sounds then turns off. I honestly don't care since it was free to me and I have another smaller lesser TV in its place, but I am probably going to have to buy him a new TV....My questions are

What is making it do that?

How to fix it yourself?

What do people charge to fix TV's?

Should I just bite the bullet and buy him a new TV?

Its a shutdown problem, something in the circuit isnt in parameters.

Shop usually charge around $50 for an estimate, which is applyable to the repair is decide to get it fixed.

Should I get a 32" TV or should I get a new monitor. I hear all i need is a S-video cord to connect my TV to my computer, but I hear if u play video games on the TV it will seem like your lagging, because the TV has a lower refresh rate than a monitor. So which should I get. I also want to keep it cheap. Like i can get a 32" LCD TV for 540 bucks.

Keep in mind the resolution on a TV is limited. It's generally near impossible to read text on a television screen. I would strongly recommend a monitor if you plan to connect it to a computer for anything more than watching movies.

I am now desperate to watch French TV after living in England for so long! Here is my setup: Lounge: a digital TV which allows me to watch freeview TV on TV thanks to an arial on the roof (even though reception for digital TV in my area is not supposed to be good!) My DVD recorder is not digital so I never record anything from that TV.

Kitchen: a non-digital TV with a digital DVD recorder. I use the DVD to access freeview digital TV and am able to record programmes on it. That TV is actually a French TV. I do not have Sky or a satellite dish or cable. I would like to watch French main channels TV and be able to record French programmes too but on the TV as opposed to watching them on the internet. Do I get someone to instal a satelite and point it somewhere but would that get me main French channels? Having a skybox is not so good as you have to pay £15 a month to get only one French channel. I am completely confused?! Can anyone please advise (inc likely costs)? thanks

TV Tuner Card Connection Problem?

I recently purchased an HP Pavillion dv9535nr notebook from the US. It has Windows Vista Home Premium and therefore Media Centre on it. The notebook comes with an HP TV Tuner Card as well.

Now, I live in India and want to set up my Cable TV connection with the TV Tuner Card. However, I am not able to connect the India Cable TV cable to the TV Tuner purchased from the US. I have tried to search several computer shops, but none of them could tell me if there's a "connector" available. I contacted HP's customer support in India, and they were like "you bought it in the US, you can use it in the US" !!! :-)

Can anyone help ?

It should be possible to repair / replace the power button on the TV fairly cheaply, but I suspect it's stuck in standby mode. I believe only way to get it out of standby would be by using the remote, so you may not be successful.

If you can find a local TV repair shop or even someone who is into electronics as a hobby, they may be able to help you.

I have a Geforce4 Ti4600+ and i have the TV Out function on it as well. But When i hook it up to the TV, windows media player wont show video on my TV, but it will on my monitor. Am i missing a codec or something? Also when i try to play Counter Strike on my TV, it shows nothing but messed up lines and orange and lines mess. CS wont show up either in other words. How do i fix this? Maybe the wire is too long that the signals are dieing on their way? I can get color when i am on the desktop or browsing the web and chatting. But Video intense things like CS, and video player will not show. What do i need? New video card with TV Out? 6600? or just shorter wire?

Try extending your windows onto a 2nd monitor using your tv as the 2nd and drag media player onto the extended monitor...thats how i hook up to my tv, hopefully it will work for you

if i have 3 tvs with scart connections and i connect the first to the second, and the second to the third, then connect a dvd player to the first tv, will the dvd players signal pass along the chain and display on each tv? i think this because surely the second tv is just displaying what is on the first tv, and the third tv is just displaying what is being shown on the second. if you understand my logic please answer!

The thing is this will only work if the tv sending the signal has a 'scart out', im quite sure that not all do. There must be a predefined 'in' or out 'out' or a piece of equipment of any kind would not know whether it was sending or receiving

Down to trial and error to get the system working.

Ensure you use scart leads with all twenty pins in place, not the cheaper ones that only have three or four pins.

It can be complicated, but I'm sure you will sort it out.

I am looking at building a new computer and was looking at the prices of TV Cards and noticed one was a digital satelite card.

I was wondering what the differences in TV cards were and if it would be worth paying extra for a satellite card and what other equipment would I need?

I know for the digital TV here (New Zealand) you need a 'top box' and a satellite(?) dish, obviously I would still need a dish but would my computer function as the top box?

Basically, what sort of TV card should I look for if I want to be able to watch Digital television through my computer?

and would it be worth it, or could a normal tv card work if I had a 'top box' thing?

(I don't currently have a dish but would like the computer to be compatiable in the future)

You will still need a "box" either way you go. The satellite card will not have the correct firmware installed to be a receiver for the pc. Look for a digital tv tuner card. Win TV I think makes one. This should give you the option of a DVR as well.

Ok i want to buy a tv stand for my 50" plasma, but i am having a small problem finding the style i would like. The living room has a fireplace when facing the main wall (kitchen is behind the living room, to the left are two windows and to the right is a staircase). I would like to have the tv above the fireplace itself, so it can be seen and so am looking for a stand that will have two poles off to the side and then the tv is mounted or placed on top of the two. Ideas are aprecciated and i will put up a diagram of the fireplace in a minute.

you could just mount the tv above the firplace but it would put holes in teh walls if you are renting or dont want the holes b4 you move you can fill them with plaster and paint over them

I recently caught up with a lot of TV shows by watching them on-line at their websites,but I found some to be much better than others.For instance I found WB 11 to be very annoying in the fact that I like to watch the show in full-screen but everytime a commercial comes on they shrink the screen to mini and the volume for the commercial is 3times louder.They also limit the amount of episodes you can watch,usually only 3 are available.

While ABC tv for watching Lost is excellent quality and works extremely fast.As well ABC TV allowed me to catch up on 3 years of Lost episodes!! I was only missing out on about 1 year though.

What do you like/disklike about the broadcast TV websites for viewing TV shows?
Since moving into a place where my PC is a lot easier to watch than the one TV, I have been watching Fox On Demand. I love being able to do this at all, but it has it's share of problems. I often have "stalling" issues, even though my bandwidth is solid. This causes 5-20 seconds worth of show to just be entirely unavailable. If I reload the entire thing, it will more often than not choke at the same spot.. missing important dialogs or punchlines can make the whole thing a bummer. Issues with video and sound quality randomly degrading too. And the comercial volume as you mentioned.

But, it's all I can do since I no longer have a DVR! So I'm happy enough... oh and thanks for the links to other networks. I wouldn't have even thought to look for them on my own for a while.
Reply:You pretty much captured most of the gripes video stream viewers deal with, watching TV episodes on their PC. Most of those complaints stem from individual website or PC user software issues---which I agree, does take away from the quality of whatever is viewed. I'm not a big fan of PC/TV viewing yet; it's nice, but not exciting.....yet.

The irony of the whole matter for me is I'm watching past episodes of TV shows I'm pretty sure have fallen victim to the writers strike---good shows that had a chance, but were sabotaged by embittered writers whose strike torpedoed 'em. I look at that and think "what a waste".....sighhhh.

Yes. But to watch regular broadcast stations, you will have to have the signal converter box by Feb. 2009. But for now it will work.

If you get cable or satellite by then, you won't have to worry about the converter box.

On an LCD TV, what's the difference between the HDMI input and the three chord inputs (red, green and blue)?

I have an XBox 360 that came with the HD Chords that have the different colors (regular ones are yellow red and white) rather than the one input chord that goes right into the HDMI pluggin on the back of the TV. The box that it came in says something like "HD component cables" but when I switch the input to the HD setting on the tv itself it says no signal so it's not going through my HD signal on the TV but rather the matching colors (I think the colors are red, green and blue) but the box says those should be HD also. So what's the difference between the two chords and where they go in the tv itself? I do notice a difference when I use the red green and blue chords verses the red white and yellow ones, but I just want to know what the difference is and why it's not showing up on my HD tv setting? Sorry this is so long, any help?

The red/green/blue cables are Component input, and they are HD. Make sure the switch on the part of the cable that plugs into your Xbox is set to HD and then go the Xbox "System" blade and adjust your settings to atleast 720p resolution. You will then be playing in HD.

Your TV manufacturer labels the inputs and so they may not have labeled it "HD" even though it is (your TV settings may even have options for you to relabel the inputs).

The difference between HDMI, Component (Red/Green/Blue), and Composite (Yellow, Red, White) is that HDMI is a digital HD signal which is slightly sharper or higher quality than the analog HD signal of Component. And Composite cables are not HD (maximum resolution is 480i)

My friend bought a Polaroid 26 TV from Walmart, the same day I went and bought a Panasonic 37 LCD from a TV store. He came over and saw my Panasonic and said I wasted my money on crap. I think I made a smart move. Panasonic is a good brand of TV, as are Sony, Toshiba, Mitsubishi and Hitachi. He kept on saying Polaroid is a good brand. He hates it when I say it sucks. When it's cheap, it's for a reason! The $1300 for the Panasonic may hurt for a little while, but I know that I pay more for quality as I have had ZERO problems with it. It makes the DirecTV look great! Well, last Thursday, the Polaroid went out! $492 down the toilet. He is SO upset right now. While he is sulking and fuming about that Polaroid, I am enjoying my DirecTV and PS3 and Wii on my Panasonic LCD. When will people STOP buying cheap junk? Damn! Polaroid lasted only for 3 weeks. What is the typical lifespan of a Panasonic? How long will mine last?

WHY? Because most GOOD companies provide parts for 11 to 12 years, and AFTER that....no parts.

My Mitsubishi lasted 18 years....but then the Video Jungle IC took a dump and I couldn't get it from the manufacturer or anybody else....

My 7 yr old son asked me why I didn't have a boyfriend. I was recovering from surgery and spent most of the day in bed. I told him the tv was my boyfriend, he entertained me all the time.

The tv set was old and would just shut itself off for no reason. I'd give it a few hard wacks on the side and it would come back on, was no big deal to me.

my computer came with the tv tuner and tv tuner driver installed (Hauppauge tv tuner) and i have an coaxial cable. how do i do this? do i connect the coaxial cable to the back of my computer and to the tv? cuz it isnt working. i'd imagine you do a lot more. i already found software i could use for it. but how do you connect the tv and computer to watch tv on the computer?

normally you would put a coax splitter (2$ hardware, probably came with the set) on wherever your coax cable from the TV terminates (in the wall) in, the splitter allows you to connect two (or more) coax cables.

you run one coax cable to your TV. The other coax cable goes to your computer.

Next you will want to run some TV software, Hauppage has their own software which is probably already installed with your PC or it came on a CD.

There are much more advanced things you can do with it but lets get it running first ;)

Please bare with me, I don't know any technical terms.

I am trying connect my PS2 to my TV thru my VCR because I cannot connect the PS2 directly to the tv. I have everything connected and the TV is on the right channel...but the screen is blue. I can kind of see the game, but it is moving from side to side and it is VERY faded. Are the machines just not compatible? If not, how would I go about being able to connect the PS2 directly to my tv? The TV is 10+ years old, and only has one cable thingy (lol). Any help is appriciated, also the name and estimated cost of the cord/adaptor I may need to get would help me a lot. Thanks!

Connecting PS2 to TV thru VCR?
Change the channel on the VCR (not the TV) to line (L). It may be called something else depending on what VCR you are using, but essentially you need to change the VCR channel so that it reads from the RCA input. Maybe go to channel 2 and hit Channel - (minus).
Reply:I have the same hookup on my TV, I assume you already have all of the cables plugged in. Make sure that you have them in the right spots, ie video cable in the video imput etc... On my VCR, to play my PS2 I have to push the "imput" button on my remote. so try that

i need a tv tuner application for my new hp tv tuner.. i installed the drivers fine i just need a program to view and record with it.. i tryed using the media center but it only searches for tv channels and dosent give the composite input...

My Son is 5Months, and when were not playing together hes watching tv, in his walker, in his bouncer, or laying on the bed or floor.

I just recently read in a Baby Magazine that this is VERY bad that Children under 2 should not be allowed to watch tv but, just seldom. It increases the risk of ADHD???

Is this true?

My Son LOVES the tv! It says something like it short wires the brain wrong, and can cause a short Attention Span.

Now I'm very Concerned about this and just wondering How Much I should let him watch Tv??

He watches Nickelodeon until stuff like Zoey 101 or the other shows like this comes on, and sometimes he does watch these to. We do watch Cartoon Network but, I find the newer cartoons on there REVOLTING. Sorry for those who watch it, I just do..Besides Scooby Doo, I wish All the Old Cartoons were on Like Tom %26amp; Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Road Runner..etc...Sadly their not.

But, anyway...What do you think? and how much tv does your children get?

First of all at 5 months I don't think they care what they watch it's not like they understand it, strange though that my daughter who is 4 months loves spongebob, but then you have to take into concideration the voices sound and lights. a lil bit of tv doesn't hurt them that young. I have a two year old and four year old boys at home too.... so my opinion tv can save a lot of parents from going crazy sometimes...lol
Reply:This is the time to start introducing your child to other exciting things in his environment- play with him on the floor, take him outside, the the park, zoo, aquarium. He is much too young to be stuck on tv. It will only get worse. Don't be a parent who ends up using the tv as a babysitter.

Reply:That sounds a little ridiculous. Instead of watching TV, interact with your son! Play games, play with his toys with him, take him outside to the park and push him the baby swing, do anything but watch TV! That sounds just so unhealthy for a babies developing eyes, let along the connections to ADHD.
Reply:I don't let my baby watch TV (it does help that we don't have cable so there isn't much on the TV anyways!). And even if we did have cable, I still wouldn't let my baby watch it.

The AAP recommends that there shoulod be NO TV for children under 2 years old and yes that is because it is thought to do everything you wrote about.

If you think of it from the babies point of view, it is much more interesting to look at lots of quickly changing colors and pictures on the TV than to just play with a toy and have to entertain himself, but this is where the problem lies. This causes the baby to expect things to change quickly and rapidly and the baby is doing nothing during this time except sitting. If this continues, the baby can become bored with toys or entertaining himself while on the floor because he is used to things constantly changing and keeping his interest. And hence can lead to a shorter attention span etc.

If possible, I would limit the TV your son watches just to times when you need to get something done - like taking a shower. But other than that, I just don't think it is worth the risk to let him watch a lot of TV.

Zero. We ditched our cable a while back; we weren't watching anything.

I'm not saying everybody else should get rid of their teevees too, but certainly it offers NO benefits for babies... Yes, even the "educational" stuff. Junk.

It's one thing to let a baby look at a screen for ten minutes while you take a shower or something, but regularly? No. Not good.

Reply:My son is also 5 months and he gets absolutely NO TV time. The pediatrics assocation of America says no TV until they are 2, and I will stick with that. There is a strong connection between too much TV time and ADHD.

I'd say it's too bad your son loves TV. Turn it off and make him engage in something else..even if it's just practicing rolling over. He'll be doing a LOT more using his brain.

He doesn't even understand what's going on on the TV, so why let him watch and waste precious developmental time being a zombie?

You're a great Mom for being concerned about this. I'd say to turn off the TV and give him a great head start in life.
Reply:I am going through this now as well. Bc I just read the same thing. I have stopped playing the tv for my son and just played with him more or let him play with his toys, etc. I have tried to keep him busy without the tv.

Reply:Some ppl say it's bad...some ppl say it's ok. I wasn't hoping that my daughter would like TV..but she does. So..I just went out and spent $100 and got her the collection of baby enstein's DVDs. If she is going to watch it..i'd rather her watch something like that. Either way..she has about 1 hour per day max i'd say. Usally when the video is over..she is about ready for something else anyway.
Reply:I don't think this is a problem as of yet. He's pretty much just looking at all of the pretty colors. As he gets a little older, active and alert, incorporate activites to occupy his time.
Reply:I must admit my 6 month old boy does that too, what I find is that my son only watches telly because its got sound and light and the easiest way to stop him watching that is to get a replacement for it i.e. to get him a TOY which has sound and light in it! Ive got my son a gym with sound and light and he LOVES it! Hope this helps x
Reply:My daughter is 7 months old and she gets about 30 minutes of baby Einstein once a month. There are so many more interactive things to do with baby than TV. They should also only be in those toys- walkers and such, for 15-25 minutes a day. If she likes some background things going on, grab some children Cd's and play music through the day.
Reply:Our pediatrician does not recommend TV until after the age of two. And, while this is not related at all, she also does not recommend juice (at all!).
Reply:Letting a baby under 3 watch TV does increase the chance of ADHD and obesity.

My son gets about 30 minutes of TV a week. We keep ours off for the majority of the day, unless he's napping or in bed.

Ok so I have read and answered a couple of questions today regarding TV in Daycare. This is my thing....Me and My daycare kids Watch the "Wiggles" everyday!!!!!! It is right after breakfast and i see it as exercise!!! We Dance, We Sing...and we use the song and dance all day during other activities......There is usually a corney lesson too!! So My question is what is up with these parents who feel because a TV is involved that thier kids are not being taken care of or loved???? I really am tired of the condesending tone these parents have towards thier daycare provider......Most of us are here because we have made the sacrifice to be home with our own kids.....and really they money these parents pay isn't much....not compared to what thier kids get from us. What are your thoughts?

I am a home daycare provider. The Wiggles is educational and if you get the kids up to move with the characters, it's exercise. But when someone says that kids in daycare are watching TV, peoples' perception is that they are sitting, watching TV. But I personally don't allow TV viewing while the children are in my care. We can exercise without TV, and I can teach without TV. I think TV is a crutch in a daycare, but that's just my personal opinion.

Reply:I have another question for you- why do some parents not let their children watch the Wiggles? I personally love watching it and find it entertaining. I have heard other parents at my daycare say they don't allow their children to watch it. Am I missing something? My neice didn't speak a word before watching The Wiggles and then she learned her alphabet from Dorothy the Dinosaur. The songs are great fun. And I also think tv is ok as long as it is used in moderation and not as a babysitter. My son gets to watch a little if he has time in the morning before going to daycare and he loves it- like it is a little special treat for a few minutes.
Reply:I totally agree with you. Parents who complain about care providers should stay home with their kids if they have these specific rules that they want to raise them by. Of course this excludes neglect and abuse. Nevertheless, if your a parent who has to put work before time with your child then it is your obligation to figure out how and where you will compensate.
Reply:The problem is not simply a child watching TV but if the child is placed in front of the TV and can not get away from it. as long as the child can choose if they watch or not it is not a problem.

using TV programmes as an aid to exercising, is very commendable, not the same as using the TV as a child minder.
Reply:There is nothing wrong with TV if it is not used as a babysitter. What you do is great, they have fun, they get exercise, and you are right there doing it with them. I am also a stay at home mommy and my son loves the show Word World on PBS....he is already learning how to spell from it and he will be 3 in a couple of weeks.
Reply:Sounds like you are one of the FEW daycare providers who use the television in an appropriate manner... I would appreciate a provider like you!

I do not appreciate a provider who would leave it on as back ground noise etc or to fill a few hours of time a day.....

Reply:My son is in a daycare that they have a TV. She puts it on and they watch Super Why, and she has the DVR so she pauses it and asks the kids questions about the things they see. She does this for 30 minutes in the morning, and then she puts the TV on after they wake from their nap and she is getting everything situated for their after nap snack. I have no problem with this! I mean if she or you would sit them down in front of the TV all day then I can understand their complaint but that is NOT what you are doing.. People are just ridiculous sometimes!

I have to add and agree with the people above, when my son is home we sit and watch Word world, even my 8 yr old likes it!
Reply:TV in daycare, now I've heard everything. Do you have any idea what you're doing to those kids? But, hey, if the parents don't care enough to stay home to raise with their own offspring, let them watch television 24/7.
Reply:I think TV is okay when it is appropriate and limited. My son is 2 and loves the Wiggles. I also teach Kindergarten and every Friday is movie day. The movies are curriculum based and usually from the public library but I still have parents complain but parents will always find something to complain about no matter what you do. It just goes with the territory of caring for someone's child, they never think that things are good enough. Good luck!
Reply:Many people feel that the tv is an easy way to get paid to babysit. I babysit ALOT and have not really had to many problems, but I do put limits on the tv because there many better things to do!
Reply:I so agree with poster "hstris"... Word World is the best show! My children are allowed to watch a few PBS shows each day... I have 28 month old twins. They LOVE Word World and have learned SO much from it! :) They also really like most of the PBS shows and it is great because I don't have to worry about yucky commercials and they often replay the same episodes, which children love. I think TV is okay as long as they're not sitting in front of it all day like zombies. As long as it is educational and non-violent, TV can be great for kids to learn letters, numbers, songs, etc. :)
Reply:I wouldn't have a problem with it if that's how you were using it. I think if a daycare provider used the TV all the time and the kids were plopped down in front of it just to occupy then, then I would have a problem with it!!
Reply:NO i think its important to have tv if its wiggles like dancing and so on and education but if its meeningless tv then i dont advise it. i think daycarers are not taking an easy way out by using tv at all if they are using it in the right ways.
Reply:I've had my oldest in a daycare where the TV was used like yours is, not too much and interactive which I was fine with. Before that I had him in one that I found out he and the other kids were being plopped in front of the TV while the provider watched soaps and talked on the phone in the kitchen ( I took him out as soon as he told me) It's hard to tell the situation when someone talks about having TV in a daycare so they jump to conclusions and the worst case scenario

I am currently in need of some new TV series. So I was hoping someone can recommend a TV series that I can catch onto. I mean I wanted to watch a TV series from the beginning but, I realized that it might be too late for it.

Are there any good new shows that are starting? (Or barely started?)

No Gossip Girl or One Tree Hill--not cutesy teenage drama

I love mystery, drama, and comedy (romance is always awesome)

I love Psych, Law And Order SVU, Monk, American Idol, New Amsterdam

TV Show Series recommendations?
If you are looking for mystery...Women's Murder Club is fairly new and is pretty good. It's on ABC and just happens to be on tonight. The CSI series' are all good (I'm partial to Miami, even though it's a little campy at times). I also like Medium and Ghost Whisperer, but you have to be up for the supernatural themes of it.

Comedies...I love How I Met Your Mother! So funny.

TV signal problems?

I have terrestrial TV and it has always worked. Today though my tv downstairs wont work which has an ariel from outside. My tv upstairs wont work either which just has an ariel that you connect in the back and is free standing. Do you know anywhere on the internet that might tell me of problems with a signal in my area of Lancaster, uk?

I'm in Lancaster and still not getting any signal for my TV this evening - freeview or terrestrial.
Reply:check out news headlines on bay radio site as it appears it problem in all area - mine still not working now though it says that signal would be back by 6pm
Reply:well if your talking about analog tv the signal problem may be coming from a new wireless device (But probable not) but if you don't want to worry about finding and fixing this problem i would recommend just getting digital tv programming because they are going to shut off all analog tv signals so you might as well jump in now and future proof yourself
