External speakers on a TV or Comcast cable box? Why little or no sound?

The tv has three red, white, and yellow rca speaker jacks in back, 3 more in front, and a headphone jack. The cable box and my dvd-vcr has many inputs and outputs. Only the headphone out jack of my tv has any volume. Can't I use plugs from the cable box to tv, or from cable box to vcr, then to tv for a louder sound? Why wouldn't the cable box or vcr-dvd player act like an amp and make louder sound go to my tv? I'm sure it could be hooked up, but how?

First try a DVD or VHS if your getting sound through the TV then that rules out the TV speakers %26amp; volume level as a cause. Comcast.com Setup %26amp; Configuration: find the diagram you need. Follow th hookup diagram for using RCA connections for a TV-VCR-CABLE BOX hookup. Or just call Comcast %26amp; they will guide you through the hookup if your clueless and have hooked it up wrong. They can also tell you how to check the volume level on the cable box.
