My tv's picture is jumpy and the screen keeps going to widescreen...help?

I have a 27 inch older Sony Trinitron tv. Recently the picture on the tv has become real jumpy. I can watch tv it is not that bad but I can't read any words that come on the tv (like commercials or the tivo menu) the screen is too jumpy. Also I have a multi colored line that is continusly going across the top of whatever I am watching. Last problem is my tv will turn the picture from full screen to wide screen (my tv is not a wide screen tv) if we bang on the top of it the picture will go back to full screen. Can someone please give me step by step instructions on how I can fix these problems. Thank you so much for your time and help.

Some component that develops the high voltage or vertical signal going to the deflection yoke is bad (assuming your old TV is a CRT a.k.a old tube model). Either of these problems is in the high voltage section of the TV and is not something you want to fix if you have no experience fixing TVs. It could be life threatening. In a 27 inch CRT set the high voltage is around twenty-five-thousand volts. Take the set to a qualified service technician or a high school/college electronics class that works on TV sets. It probably just needs some soldering done in the right place. But I would prefer to keep you safe. And I must also advise that with some of today's sets the wrong amount of solder in the wrong place might damage a component leading you to buying a new TV (surface mounted soldered components need proper training and tools).
Reply:We own a Panasonic which was only 4yrs old when it started with lines and then eventually black screen with a line in the middle. Banging it restored the picture for some time but eventually it stopped working all together (sound but no screen) My brother (techno geek), opened it up and after a day of searching found a cracked board. He did a slight repair to patch it (soldered it) and it worked for about 8 more months.

Your best to find a new TV. The repair bill would be far too pricey and not worth it in the long run (if they find it at all). If you have ever opened up the TV nowadays, you'd understand how difficult it really is to find the problem (small boards and leads everywhere). It truly is like searching for a needle in a haystack.
Reply:Sounds like the Vertical Hold is going out. Nothing you can fix, you'll need a TV tech for that. If it's more than a few years old it's probably not worth fixing. Sorry.
Reply:I think you may be in the market for a new tv
Reply:Have you seen white noise?

...yeah
