Have you had tv licencing letters and people knocking at your door even though you dont have a tv?

Since ive moved to my current home, i dont have a tv. BUt i keep getting letters through the post once a month and then

TV people visiting my place and leaving 'calling cards'

They dont know who lives here, nor do i think its any of thier buisness. Why should i declare my name just so that can send me personalised threats, of fines, etc??

I just wandered if anyone else has had the same problems.?

Ive been told that they can obtain a search warant and can access my home wether im in or not and look for anytihng capable of recieving BBC channels.

So thats TV sets, setup boxes, satlite boxes, cable boxes, freeview boxes, computers, mobile phones...

Does this mean they can fine me for simply owning a computer that 'Could' recieve tv chanels.? - my computer has no tv card, but i was wandering if they would fine me because i could buy a tv carb or usb plugin and watch tv illegally

Have you had tv licencing letters and people knocking at your door even though you dont have a tv?
This question was intriguing to me because in the States we have no licensing fee so I was confused for a bit. I did some research and found this article in the Times Online.

Apparently they CANNOT charge a fee even if you do use the computer to view if it is streamed through the Internet. Adding a TV tuner card does in effect turn the computer into a Television so be careful on that front. The article did mention a need to start charging a fee for Internet but that it wouldn't be in effect for some time.

They cannot fine you for something you might do or can do but only what you do indeed DO. That means they need proof that you did something wrong. So do not stress yourself over it and if they keep coming to your door put up a sign that says No Television on the premises. Go away!

Reply:Every address that does not have a current licence, is listed on their computer files, so that is why they will always return.
Reply:I used to get letter regarding me apparently not possessing a TV licence, despite the fact that I have one. This carried for a few months until I had finally had enough and sent a letter back explaining the situation. Then it stopped.

What I would suggest you do is to get in touch with the TV licencing people, either by letter or telephone, declaring that you do not own a TV set or other devices that could otherwise receive TV.

Mind you, they might penalise you for have an Internet connection (which I am guessing you do unless you are on a friend's or a work computer).
Reply:The law states that you must have a TV licence if you possess anything in your home that is capable of picking up a TV signal. In order to do this, you must have a TV analogue or digital tuner. If you don't have a freeview box, digital DVD recorder, TV, sky box, or computer with TV tuner in, then you have committed no offence. However, people with no TV equipment are so few and far between that it might be a good idea to write to the licencing authority and inform them of this. If you do so and they continue to send people round, this is harassment and you can take them to court for it. Hope this helps!
Reply:just pay for a licence and save the stress. East enders is so good as he shaged her and he was not dead but she looses the kid she was carryin and he hits her and loses job but she .............................
Reply:don't think so not if it's not capable of recieving tv
Reply:They talk tough to make people get a licence but I know people who never have bought one and most probably never will unless they're caught. For me personally I pay for it, but to be really honest I'm not that big a fan of TV.
Reply:My friend doesn't have a TV and they bother him every year, it drives him up the wall, they just cant believe that some people don't.

If your computer doesnt have a TV card your fine
Reply:No they can't fine you unless they prove you have a TV.

You don't have to let them in, engage with them, or even talk to them.

Tell them you have no TV, and to get lost!
Reply:A TV licensing fellow came to the manor a few months ago. I am hoping to release him from the cellars by 2010.
